Yesterday was a public holiday by me for the arrival of the Indians.
They went through so much being indentured laborers, treated like slaves and barely being paid dirt. What we are today is owed to them.
In 2010, I wrote poem about them for our little family thanks giving, it pretty much explains everything pretty well.
"Very, extremely long ago,
Indentured laborers were treated Oh! So low!
The Indians came on the Fatal Razak,
Saying as they left, “I may never come back”
At the heels of the Indians the Chinese came,
Some not knowing why, or who to blame
Though two different races, both were equally treated,Battered, unkempt and never allowed to be seated
After 7 long years of being driven,
To both groups a choice was given.
We will pay to send you back to your beloved home land,
Or stay here, where we will give you something to build with your own hand.
Some stayed here, a new life to make
Others, the opportunity to go home they did take.
Take our ancestors for example, who were born of hard labor
Is it not to them, that our good god took favor?
So here we are gathered round the table,
Thanking everyone around us, as far as we are able
From these people a good lesson we can learn,
With the ability to thrive hard, much things you can earn.
So thank our forefathers for all you have today
And hope that, to everyone, you will be able to repay"
So now you're wondering, "what the heck does this have to do with fashion?!?"
To answer that,
1) I am getting to that, have patience, and
2) It's good to learn something new every day so be grateful.
If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have all the stuff we have today, like...
Genuine 22 carat gold sarees which I will inherit from my mother
Sparkly bangles
And...
wait for it...
Pink and green saris!
